Create Multi Dimensional Calculation rules to analyze complex data sets quickly. This rule enables you to use many sources but only one target to make your data management process easier.

Important aspects to keep into consideration to create a Multi Dimensional calculation rule:

  • You can have multiple sources but should only have one Target in a Multi Dimensional calculation.
  • The target of the Multi Dimensional calculation rule can only have a single tagged member.
  • Use a target Dataview that is made for your Multi Dimensional calculation exclusively. You might accidentally clear the source data.

The first step to create a Multi Dimensional calculation rule is to create a rule header. To create a rule header:

FieldDefinition
Calculation NameSpecify name of your Multi Dimensional Calculation.
ModelSelect the model from the dropdown to which the calculation is applied. If left blank, the calculation is executed on any model selected at run time.
Calculation Order

Enter the number specifying the order the calculation runs in.

It must be an integer value and allows you to order calculations in case of any dependencies.

Store Target

It's whether the target of the calculation will be stored or not.

  • True: Calculation result is stored in the database.
  • False: Data is calculated but not stored in the database. This can be used if the result of a calculation will be used for another calculation, but it doesn't need to be stored.
Calculation Type

Select value from the dropdown.

These are created in the Calculation Types editor. If you assign a Calculation type to a Multi Dimensional Calculation, you can only run calculations of that type when the calculation is running.

This is essentially grouping the calculations. It's done by setting the Type parameter = to the Calculation Type when the process is run.

Active

Select value from the dropdown.

  • True: Activate multi dimensional calculation rules.
  • False: Deactivate multi dimensional calculation rules.

Only the active rules will be executed during run-time.

Select a Multi Dimensional Calculation Rule to open the Details pane at the bottom of the screen. It shows details of the rule selected.

These columns for the Multi Dimensional Calculation Rule details are available:

FieldDefinition
Rule Number

Enter the number of the rule. You can create multiple lines for the same rule number

This field isn't currently used in the calculation.

Source Target

Select value from the dropdown to specify whether the defined intersection is a source or a target of the calculation

You can have multiple sources but should only have one Target in a Multi Dimensional calculation.

Step

Specify the step number. If you are using only additions (+) and/or subtractions (-) in your Calculation Multi rule, all steps should be set to 0.

If you are introducing any multiplication (*) or Divisions (/) in your rule, you need to change the step number to control the calculation order (BEMDAS).

For example, if you want to include a multiplication, change the step order to 1. To further include another calculation in order, change the step to 2, and so on.

Is PeriodicSpecify if the value for that step in the Multi Dimensional calculation should use the Periodic amount instead of the Year-to-Date amount.
Local CurrencySelect True or False to specify if the calculations step works in local currency.
Operator

Select the operator to be used, such as +, -, /, *.

Currently % isn't supported.

<Dimensions>

A column for each dimension in the tenant is displayed.

You only need to select the dimension members applicable to the data model the calculation will run on.

If the scope isn't limited to a specific dimension, you can leave that blank to indicate that the calculation will run on all members in that dimension.

For various <Dimensions> columns:

Note:

  • The Target or the Dataview dimension should be a specific dataview used for calculation multi. It is recommended to create a dataview called ValueCalc to hold the target of the Calculation Multi. Set the DataviewType property of the member to Value
  • If you have a hard-coded Date or Scenario in the Source and Target of your calculation, the Source date(s) or scenarios must be selected as a parameter when running the calculation.

Warning: If you don't set the Delete parameter to 0, the Calculation Multi process always deletes the target Dataview, Scenario, and Date. It is recommended to specify the ValueCalc Dataview as the target to not clear any source data.
