Shared members permit a single member, such as an entity, to appear in more than one place within the same hierarchy. This is useful when you need to use the same data for different calculations or reports with different rollups. You can add shared members to your default hierarchy.

You can include a shared member in the default hierarchy. For example, the default hierarchy includes Canada as a parent, with the cities of Toronto and Ottawa as its children. However, a manager for the Ontario region needs a report that includes only cities within that province. Instead of creating and managing duplicate records for Toronto and Ottawa, you can create an Ontario parent and Toronto and Ottawa as shared members.

To add shared members within the Entity dimension:

  1. Open the Models module, select the Dimensions tab, and double-click a dimension, such as Entity, to open the Hierarchy Manager.
  2. Right-click on an existing member or the top-level member, such as Total Group.
  3. Right-click and select Add Child.
  4. Enter a name for the new parent member, such as Ontario.
  5. Locate the member you want to share from the original hierarchy, such as Toronto, right-click on that member and select Copy.
  6. Locate the new parent member you created, such as Ontario.
  7. Right-click on the parent member.
  8. From the context menu, select Paste and then choose Paste Child (Shared).
  9. Repeat steps 5–9 to add additional shared Members.
  10. Select Save and then Process from the toolbar.

Note: Saving the structure only stores your changes temporarily. You must separately select Process to propagate those changes throughout the application and make them active system-wide.
