Optimize Anaplan XL Reporting performance by reducing Excel volatile formulas, trimming excessive formatting rows, and disabling costly grid properties, such as Track active cell and Refresh when driving cells change. Design grids efficiently by using hierarchies in filters with slicers rather than nesting many hierarchies on columns and rows.
When to use grids and formula-based reporting
Formula-based reports can slow down when you use too many formulas. Excel's volatile formulas change often, so the workbook has to recalculate. This refreshes every grid, table, and formula report at once. To avoid this, use grids instead of formulas when you're working with large reports.

Tips for large grids
Too many formatting rows on the format sheet will slow down your reports. To fix this, turn off Apply formatting in Grid properties if you have too many grids. You can also cut down the number of formatting rows by using wildcards (*) or grid names instead of repeating the same member name over and over.

Grid properties to avoid
Two grid properties can drag down large reports if you leave them enabled:
- Track grid's active cell follows the cell you select, which adds overhead.
- Refresh when driving cells change forces the grid to update every time a value changes.
Deselect these options when you no longer need them.
Smart grid design
Use hierarchies in filters instead of nesting too many hierarchies on your columns and rows. You can hide filter hierarchies from the display using the right-click menu so they stay out of the way. Add slicers to those filter hierarchies to narrow down the data and make your reports faster and easier to read.
